The NEMC – Southern Zone started its operations in 2014, with the goal of bringing its services close to people. The Zonal Office carries activities of NEMC Head Quarters, related to raising awareness to stakeholders; planning and research on environment; environmental compliance and enforcement; environmental impact assessment; environmental monitoring; coordinating environmental activities; and all other activities that NEMC has to perform as required by the Environmental Management Act (Cap 191).
The Southern Zone covers three regions, namely Mtwara, Lindi and Ruvuma. The Zone has 15 Districts with an area of 146,419 km2. According to Census of 2012, the Southern Zone has a population of 3,512,397. The Regions with respective Districts are as follow:
On the South it borders with Mozambique; on the North are Morogoro and Pwani Regions; On the West borders Malawi, Mbeya and Iringa; and on the East is the Indian Ocean.
